In order to respond to the shortage of disinfectant gel felt in March in Portugal, Hovione appointed a specific team to produce this urgently needed product and handed it over for free to all those working on the"front line" against the pandemic. The company had already proceeded in the same way in January at their facilities in Macau, when the pandemic hit the territory.
Since March, Hovione has produced and donated 284 thousand tons of antiseptic solution (AS), manufactured according to WHO standards, for pro bono delivery to different entities in Portugal. The amount of product offered was enough to disinfect 20 million hands more than 20 times a day for a week and, if bought on the market in half-liter containers, would have a commercial value of 4 million euros.
The beneficiaries were the NHS, the Armed Forces, the National Pharmacy Association, private hospitals (CUF, Lusíadas and Trofa groups), municipalities, Firemen, charities, Distribution and Transport companies, supermarket chains, post office and logistics, among other entities.
